On September 17th, 2026 I debated Paul Facey, the Australian Anglican more commonly known as “The Other Paul.”
The topic was: Is Scripture sufficient for settling doctrinal disputes?
When you see this question how you interpret it?
I focused on the notion of juridicial settlement, which is to say, how an organized social body can proceed as a whole when a controversy arises that threatens its unity. Scripture is insufficient in performing such acts of dispute resolution in the same way that the U.S. Constitution can’t perform the acts of the U.S. Supreme Court.
Paul, almost immediately conceded my sense of what it mans to “settle” and instead structured his argument around an “intellectual” or epistemic sense of the word.
Check out our discussion in the video above. The audience enjoyed it, and I did too.
My main regret, however, was that I didn’t drill further into Paul’s concession, since while he might concede the reality of juridicial settlement within a particular congregation, I doubt he would so readily concede the reality of juridicial settlement as it relates to the one Body whole that is the universal Church.
I don’t want to influence your impression too much before you’ve had a chance to tune in, if that’s what you’re wanting to do.
If you have strong feelings or perspectives on the matter, I’d love to hear about those in the comments below.
In Christ,
